What is a crown?

A crown is a type of restoration that encases your whole tooth. Crowns lend strength and protect from damage. There are several options in crown materials, including:

  • Gold crowns

  • Porcelain crowns

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns

Porcelain or porcelain-fused crowns are the most popular choices because they look like your natural teeth. Dental crowns work on two levels: They give you a more functional tooth and also improve its appearance.

Usually, crowns take two visits to Steelecroft Dental. In the first appointment, our doctor will prepare your tooth by taking a small amount of enamel from the surface. She makes a mold of your tooth next and then places a temporary crown on your tooth. Our doctor installs the permanent crown in around two weeks, and you're done.

When do I need a crown?

You may need a crown in a variety of situations, including:

  • After a root canal

  • As support for a dental bridge

  • As part of a dental implant

  • Cover for a cracked or broken tooth

Crowns are used on both back teeth and front teeth, depending on your needs. If you need a tooth cover for purely cosmetic reasons, a veneer may be an alternative to consider.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a fixed kind of dental restoration. Bridges replace a tooth, or several connecting teeth, with artificial teeth that our doctor permanently anchors in your mouth.

Your bridge includes two crowns, both of which are customized to fit the teeth they cover. Those crowns connect to the restoration tooth to keep it in place.

It usually takes just two appointments to get a new bridge. In the first appointment, our doctor prepares your teeth for crowns and makes molds. In the return visit, our doctor permanently installs your brand new bridge.

When do I need a dental bridge?

There are several possible reasons to get a dental bridge, including:

  • Allowing you to eat normally again

  • Relieving stress on your other teeth

  • Restoring the dimensions of your face

  • Replacing a removable denture

  • Maintaining the positions of your teeth

A bridge can be a great solution in many situations, but sometimes a dental implant or another type of restoration works better. Our doctor will discuss your restoration needs with you to help you find the right option.
